: Small things, unusual things.

: Green/machine.

: Grass in a tractor.

: Newton notwithstanding.

: 3-piece pavilion.

: Right, the new down.

: Cold, the new hot.

: Fudge stripe.

: Where now and then meet.

: One inch window.

: Rust bucket.

: Oats.

: Firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4.

: 3D model.

: Dogtag.

: Transplant plan.

: Burnt sienna.

: Orchard visitor.

: Hurricane windchime.

: Honey bumble.

: Lantern.

: Rubber arrow.

: Iron zebra.

: Boot garden.

: Ski belts.

: Prefood.

: Windoweeds.

: Molten bolt.

Fixing Stuff

It wouldn’t be a farm if everything worked.

: I used to think farming was all about planting…

: …and transplanting. That was a fairytale.

: Truth is, many days are spent like this.

: And this.

: And this.

: And this.

: You need the right tools.

: And the right parts.

: Or else you rummage for the perfect piece of scrapiron.

: Tuck it in…

: Weld it up…

: Grind it down…

: And off you go.

: But somedays, you need to call in the pros and they take your toys away.

: Yes, some days really leave things hanging.

: When your back is beat…

: …and your tractor has no seat.

: That’s when you take a moment to regroup…

: Gather your thoughts…

: Put your ducks in a row…

: …And quit for the day!

Meet the Tractors

These guys are the “other farmers.”

: I’m the backhoe. I dig dirt and move stuff.

: I’m a jack of all trades, and just got a brand new engine.

: I’m Penelope. If you see me, say hello.

: You can hook all kinds of tools to me, like these forks.

: I’m the 656. An old red Ford with a “hydrostatic” gear.

: That means I can go reeaallly slow as I work the fields.

: These are my “wires,” and sound system to keep us going.

: Hi. I’m the Blue Ford, a classic “offset” tractor.

: My motor is off to the side — so the driver can watch the crops.

: I’m getting some TLC, should be back in action soon.

: I’m the High Boy, just like the 656 only way high up.

: I can go right over crops without damaging them.

: Zorro and I like to see who can stand stillest.

: I’m the Green Truck. Most days I’m on nursery duty.

: My front seat, with farmer stuff.

: I’m George Jones, sentimental darling of the fleet.

: I can do all the stuff they do in commercials.

: I’m Red Delicious, or Cherry Pie, depends who you ask.

: I’m on the scene, wherever the fun projects are.

: My short-bed is pretty much always loaded.

Meet the Farm Dogs.

IT REALLY IS their farm, so let’s see what they are up to.

: Katrina has brought Balto a rock.

: Enter Zorro.

: Zorro has brought Balto nothing. Except friendship.

: Balto is unimpressed.

: After some deliberation, the trio reconfigures.

: Balto supervising. If the mood strikes, he will bonk your camera.

: Meanwhile, Tundra naps.

: Same spot, new bedding.

: Kneel down on arrival, and you get bumrushed.

: Because it’s time for hockey warmups.

: Balto, thinking.

: Zorro and Jasper, waiting.

: James, master of the nursery.

: Jesse (R.I.P. 2012), master of James.

: If you comprehend this apple, you understand Katrina.

: Katrina, exhibiting the far-off stare of the consummate bird dog.

: Errarrrrrrrwaaa.

This is What We Got When Cleaning Up the Farm One Summer.

Visual inventory of the junk/treasures that turned up when we cleaned the farm in Summer 2010. And that ain’t even the half of it.

These items—and maybe 20 tons of other stuff—were scattered around the farm, buried in weeds and brambles.

Some of them were leftover from our many projects; some from previous owners who had let the orchards fall into a derelict state.

Tons went to the recycling place downtown, and the rest has been repurposed or organized as useful scrap in the farm shop.

That cleared up space for new plantings of fruit and vegetables, and opened up corners of the farm to spruce for public enjoyment.
