DEAR FARMKETEERS: The traintracks and tarmacs of England are melting. The Secret Service can’t find the text messages. And – gasp – Brad Pitt threatens to incite a surge of middle-aged manspreading by posing in a brown linen kilt. So how about some pretty good news to inoculate the locavore population against these inklings of doom?

YOU CAN PICK PEACHES NOWWWW. In fact, now is when they need picking – over the next 2 or 3 days. There will be several waves of ripening peaches as always, but this year the crop is much smaller than last year. We expect short flurries of picking, perhaps a couple days each on short notice. This is the first round, please pick them by the end of this weekend. Ask at the farmstand and we will direct you to the proper rows. As of today, we’re talking about “regular” “round” peaches, meaning the roughly spherical ones. The “flat” “donut” peaches are not ready to pick yet, the roughly toroidal ones.

DONUT PEACHES ARE NOT READY TO PICK! BUT! FRESH DONUTS ARE! Served Thursday through Sunday 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Mark 2 Donut Robot is churning out fresh fried rings of fructotic splendor – sprinkled, if you like, with cinnamon sugar. “A sprinkle of sin, sugar,” is all you have to say. No donuts served on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, when the Mark 2 Donut Robot observes its lavish Cyborg Sabbath. Amen.

THE RARE JULY APPLE – PICK YOUR OWN. First variety of the year, Yellow Transparent. Of course we know what you are thinking: “Yellow” and “Transparent” make the most unappetizing fruit name since Edelborsdorfer. But nothing creates a community orchard mid-July bumrush like Yellow Transparent apples – and it’s time now. Your Siberian cousins ARE WILD ABOUT THIS APPLE. A cold-hardy variety imported in the 1800s from the far north, it ripens in July by design for the short Arctic growing season. To cut the acidity, people in the olden/colden days added SALT – take note, foodivorous foodies! – and called them salt apples. We call them Old Yellers. They’ll make you scream for their creamy apple sauce, first chance of the year. They are good stuff to be thankful for – not ridiculed for being early to the party.

PICK YOUR OWN HERBS. A modest garden by most measures, but offering the thrills of basil, Thai basil, marjoram, dill, sage, thyme, oregano, chives, parsley to all ye who seek.

PICK YOUR OWN FLOWERS. Please be gentle with our somewhat tender plants. Zinnias, dahlias, celosia, gomphrena, snapdragons, strawflowers, ageratum, pincushion flower, verbena. Use scissors instead of ripping and tearing at them with your bare hands. Civilized ‘Creekniks!

U-PICK RASPBERRIES. The summer raspberry crop will taper off soon. But you can come picking and hunt for berries. Others are still scoring hauls. We usually get a smaller fall crop.

COFFEE! First time ever, you can get a cup of coffee at the farmstand. We are brewing from hometown roaster, Ithaca Coffee Company, and you can serve yourself. No lattes, no pumpkin spice, no ice. Just a simple cuppa for your agritourism adventure. Self-serve kiosk next to the hole-in-the-wall donut shoppe. (New tumblers keep stuff hot or cold forever!)

POTTED HERBS & FLOWERS. Get them at the farm stand. Start your own ‘Creek. Send us a newsletter. We’ll come picking and herbing and cidering and donutting at your house. We will keep our dogs out of your berry and vegetable fields! We will drive very slowly on your farm! We will be really pretty nice! Very nice and really pretty nice customers!

NEW BUS STOP = INDIAN CREEK!  Take your public transportation right to your u-pick destination. TCAT has moved the bus stop to directly in front of the farm, so anyone can take the #21 from town to our doorstep. You want to avoid using the #14, which ends at the hospital requiring a walk on the highway. Be safe!

DRIVE SAFELY!  We have witnessed several terrible, high-speed collisions on Route 96 by the farm in recent years. Please approach the farm carefully, exit the farm carefully, and drive slowly when you are on the farm!

DEAR FARMKETEERS: Greg will pedal away with all the garlic on Monday. Now is your chance to pick.

THIS WEEK ONLY – PICK YOUR OWN GARLIC. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. U-pick garlic will be $1.25/head, shallots $6.00/handful. Easier than ever! We “pre-dug” all three varieties Inchelium Red (softneck), Continental (hardneck), and German Red (hardneck) so the whole crop is ready and waiting to be gathered just below the surface. It has been a dry year so the same amount of the pungent garlicky goodness you love is condensed into smaller heads. Pre-picked garlic will be $9.00/lb at the farmstand.

STOCK UP FOR WINTER. If stored correctly, this year’s garlic will last until about April 2023. The best way to cure garlic is to tie cloves in bunches of 15-20 and hang in a dry, well-ventilated area such as under a front porch. After the stalks have totally dried in three or four weeks remove dried stalks for storage. Keep at even temperature and low humidity if possible – do not refrigerate or freeze.

U-PICK RASPBERRIES. The berry patches are seeing a lot of action, so don’t count your berries before you pick. The abundance varies day to day, and the summer raspberry crop will taper off soon. But you can come picking and hunt for berries. Others have scored nice hauls. See below.

DEAR FARMKETEERS: For some cheery folks, it is the Twizzler-sweet Sweet Sixteen apple. For others, it’s the charm-school graduate Red Haven peach. Doubtless there are others who would claim the haute couture San Marzano tomato. And for at least one rabble-rousing chap in our troubled republic, it might be the colossal, aggrieved, narcisstic pumpkin. What is your spirit fruit?

CALLING ALL RASPBEOPLE TO RASPBANIA! This is your time to shine, the one week each year when raspberries – and their human devotees – claim solo billing in the u-pick lineup. Soon enough the rabble will be all a-titter about peaches and tomatoes and apples. But for now, we happily incite the raspble. First come, first get! Discover your drupelets!

SO COME PICK YOUR OWN RASPBERRIES.  The berry patches are seeing a lot of action, so the abundance varies day to day (strawberries are done for the year). DEAR FARMKETEERS, did you see the Strawberry Moon last week?  Ever since scientists proved that astrology is more scientific than astronomy, we have looked to the Strawberry Moon to forecast our yield — always 9 days after the pink orb in the night sky, we get a whopper of croppage.  This year, too.

PLEASE COME PICK STRAWBERRIES NOW!  The recent heat pumped up the patch.  Ask at the farm stand for a map to the new 2022 strawberry fields.

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOR NOW.  The fields are marked “Strawberry Fields FOREVER” even though they move every couple years.  But so does the sign.  So it’s always right.  Like astrology.

PICK RASPBERRIES NOW TOO!  The summer raspberry crop is just beginning.  There is a main patch and another patch and another spot along a fenceline.  Please ask at the stand for directions, or try a-wandering in the spirit of the planets – after all planet comes from old-time Greek for wanderer

DEAR FARMKETEERS & ‘CREEKNIKS, once in a while the bumbling newsdesk that produces these Fresh Crop Alerts improbably brings you accurate and actionable reporting on the crops at The ‘Creek.  Last week we projected that pumpkins would be picked clean well before Halloween, and this week we can confirm that projection.  Pumpkins are kaput, though you might find a straggler.  Especially if you are one of those blessed beings who meanders through life with only the most occasional effort and for whom everything slides into place as if Zeus and his sister/wife Hera were your personal assistants.  For the rest of us, it is last chance to pick apples – you’ll have to earn them – and possibly last chance to get sprouts, vegetables, flowers, cider, and donuts.  This year’s harvest will wrap early and suddenly!  Come soon!

• Indian Creek Farm is 1/2 mile north of the Cayuga Medical Center traffic light.  We are on the left, just after the Dubois Road intersection, as you come over the rise.  The entrance comes up quickly.
• There is no need to increase speed to 55 MPH.  Stay slow to keep the cars behind you slow.
• Use your left TURN SIGNAL well before the turn.  We have watched people stop to turn into the farm without using their signal.

While on Farm

• Please drive slowly.  There is no hurry.  You are on vacation while on the farm.  There are kids and folks of all ages walking around the farm.  Take it easy.

Exiting

• Do not pull out if you can even see a car coming.  Assume the car is speeding and that you will get hit.
• Be patient, an opening will come
